Mack H. Paynter, Jr., 92 of Flushing, Ohio, formerly of Lorain, Ohio died Tuesday morning, December 12, 2017 in Cambridge Place, Cambridge, Ohio. He was born on May 2, 1925 in Wheeling, West Virginia to the late Hazel M. (Jones) who died in 1982 and Mack H. Paynter, Sr. who died in 1952. Mr. Paynter lived and grew up in Cameron, West Virginia. He served as an armed guard in the U. S. Navy during World War II in the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters. Mr. Paynter was a part of the Normandie Invasion, receiving two Bronze medals and a plaque and special medal of recognition from the French government. In 1949 he moved to Lorain where he was employed for twenty years as a bus driver for Employees Transit Line, retiring in 1969. Mr. Paynter worked in the Sheffield/Sheffield Lake Board of Education as a custodian in Forest Lawn Elementary School. He was associated with Grace Baptist Church, Lorain; he was a member of the American Legion, Post 30, Lorain, V. F. W., Post 1079, Elyria, Ohio and the American Legion, Post 18, Cameron. Mr. Paynter was a former member of Jolly 60s in which he played the dulcimer entertaining in nursing homes. His hobbies included whittling, making canes and woodworking. He enjoyed camping and traveling. Mr. Paynter is survived by his wife, Belva Irene (nee: Hubbs) Paynter to whom he was married on July 22, 1946, his sons, George E. Paynter of Amherst, Ohio, Larry A. Paynter of Cameron and Mack H. Paynter III of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, his daughter, Janet Marie Knight of Flushing with whom he and his wife made their home, sisters, Hilda J. Cravener of Minnesota and Patsy Swegard of Lorain, eight grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter. Friends will be received on Monday, December 18, 2017 from 5 PM until 8 PM in the Walter A. Frey Funeral Home, 700 West Erie Avenue, Lorain, Ohio 44052. Funeral services will be in the funeral home on Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at 11 AM with Pastor Jay Roller officiating. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memory Gardens, Avon, Ohio with full military honors by V. F. W., Post 1079. The family requests that memorial contribution be made to the VFW, Post 1079, Elyria or the American Legion, Post 18, Cameron.
