John Bernard "Woody" Wood, age 87, long-time resident of Lorain, died Thursday, January 20, 2011 at Lake Pointe Health Center, Lorain, after a sudden illness. Woody was born in Lakewood, September 13, 1923 to the late Bertrand E. and Jessie (nee Flarity) Wood. He was raised in Sheffield Village and graduated from Brookside High School. Following high school he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in World War II. Woody was a private first class and was in the second wave of enlisted men who landed on the beaches at Normandy. For his brave service, he was awarded three bronze stars. In 1983 Woody retired from the U.S. Postal Service where he was employed for 25 years. He was a postal clerk and worked the branch located at 10th St. and Broadway Avenue, Lorain. In retirement Woody enjoyed gambling, and was proud of the fact that he had taken 32 trips to Las Vegas. He had extensive knowledge of the Kentucky Derby running's and followed the Cleveland sports teams. His memberships include the Loyal Order of Moose #552, Lorain, and he held life memberships to American Legion Post 30 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 451, both of Lorain. Survivors include dear friends James R. (wife Vickie) May of Lorain and Dana R. Limbach of Lorain, a niece Linda Cynar of Largo, Florida and a nephew Jerry Faragher of Lorain. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Sterling Wood and his sister Wilma B. Faragher. Friends will be received Tuesday, 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. time of service at the Walter A Frey Funeral Home, 700 West Erie Avenue, Lorain. Chaplain Chris Robinson of New Life Hospice of St. Joseph will officiate. Burial with full military rites will follow in Garfield Cemetery, Sheffield Village.
