Joel Austin Hartley, 72, of Lorain, Ohio passed away October 18, 2014. Born in Gallipolis, Ohio, on June 24, 1942, to Minerva Mae (nee: Edwards) and Malcolm Douglas Hartley; in 1950 he and his family moved to Lorain where he grew up. Graduating in 1960 from Lorain High School he followed in the footsteps of his father Malcolm (WWII), his grandfather Oliver (Spanish American War) and his great-grandfather Charles (Spanish American War), by joining the U.S. Army, where he served in Germany from 1960-1963. In his younger days, Mr. Hartley enjoyed motorcycle racing at Meadowlarks in Amherst, Ohio, and he had a passion for adventure which included white-water rafting, canoeing, camping and hiking. Mr. Hartley also took great enjoyment from genealogy, traveling and watching NASCAR. During his 41-year tenure at the Lorain Journal, he was known as an incredible story-teller with a wonderful sense of humor. He is survived by his fiancï¿Â½, best friend and companion of eighteen years, Ada J. Pruchnicki, of Lorain, daughter Ginger Lynne (Russell) Graham of Florida, son Christopher Joel Hartley of Ohio, daughter Cathleen Mae (Michael) Lynch of Michigan, sister Lynne (Paul) Katonak of South Carolina, brother Lee (Nancy) Hartley of South Carolina, and two grandchildren, Ciarra and Nicholas. The family will receive friends onSaturday, November 22, 2014, from noon till 4 p.m. at the Rose Cafï¿Â½ (in Lakeview Park) 1800 West Erie Ave., Lorain. A celebration of his life will commence at 12:30 with the Reverend Dean Van Farowe officiating. Full military honors will follow by the Honor Guard of DAV, Chapter 20. The family requests that any memorial donations in his name be made to the Lorain County Metro Parks. Arrangements are being handled to by the Walter A.
