Gus E. Swanson

Gus E. Swanson, 76, of Sheffield Lake, passed away on Saturday, October 5, 2013 in the New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph, Lorain, Ohio after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio on February 13, 1937. Mr. Swanson was a 1957 graduate of Lincoln West High School, Cleveland. He was an honorably discharged veteran of the US Navy and US Air Force. Mr. Swanson worked for the old Cleveland Transit System from 1966 until 1970. when he moved to Sylvania, Ohio where he was employed as an insurance inspector and investigator. He returned in 1973 to Cleveland where he was employed for twenty eight years with J&L Steel Company and LTV Steel, retiring in 2001. Mr. Swanson was a member of the Cleveland Auxiliary Police Unit for many years and later served in a similar position with the Sheffield Lake Auxiliary Police. He drove for the Westlake Cab Company of Cleveland for twenty three years. Mr. Swanson was a member of the Broadway Assembly Church, Lorain.. He was an avid Cleveland Indians fan who enjoyed traveling, card games, puzzles, fishing, Christian TV, Southern Gospel music and spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Virginia L (nee: Benesh), son, Eric (Melissa D.) Swanson of Columbia Township, daughters, Mary (Walter A.) Eshleman of Lorain and Victoria Swanson of Sheffield Lake, grandchildren, Anna, Kayla, Hope, Nicole and Walter, brother and sister-in-law, David and Barbara McNeilly Sr. of Middleburg Hts. Ohio, three nephews and one niece. Mr. Swanson was preceded in death by his mother, Adele Rose (nee: Fellows) Swanson in 1961, his father, Gus E. Swanson, Sr. in 1979, his grandfather, James Mackie in 1977 and his baby daughter who passed away just after birth in 1966. The family will receive well wishers and friends on Thursday, October 10, 2013 from 5 PM until 7 PM at the Walter A. Frey Funeral Home, 700 West Erie Ave, Lorain, OH 44052 and also on Friday, October 11, 2013 from 11am until 1 pm at the Broadway Assembly Church, 5495 Broadway Ave, Lorain, Ohio 44052 where funeral services will follow at 1 PM with Pastor Matt Jones of Broadway Assembly Church and Pastor Kiel Nunn of First Baptist Church, Sheffield Lake officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain with full military honors. Donations may be made to the Broadway Assembly Church, The Gideon Society or the American Cancer Society.
