Gladwyn McKnight Obituary

Gladwyn Morris 'Midnight' McKnight, 81 of Lorain, Ohio died Sunday morning, February 16, 2014 at Lake Pointe Health Care, Lorain. He was born on February 22, 1932 in Owen Sound, Ontario, Canada to the late Helen Viola (nee: McLveen) and Charles Sylvester McKnight. In 1948 Mr. McKnight moved from Owen Sound to Lorain where he has made his home for the remainder of his life. He served for forty four years in the U. S. Merchant Marines, doing tours of duty in the Gulf War and Desert Storm. For three years he served as the Military Sea Life Commander and later became a Second Assistant Lieutenant Commander. Mr. McKnight worked on the Great Lakes freighters for forty years before retiring in 1988. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church, Lorain. Mr. McKnight was also a member of the Buckeye Marine Mariner Merchant Marines and the Inland Sea Maritime Museum in Toledo, Ohio. Mr. McKnight enjoyed model shipbuilding, especially the pre-historic, World War II and Classic ships. He is survived by his son, Jack G. McKnight of Canal Fulton, Ohio, his daughter, Doris Ruth Ann McKnight, Jr. of Lorain and his step-daughter, Karen Critelli of Lorain. In addition to his parents, Mr. McKnight was preceded in death on March 5, 2005 by his wife Doris G. (nee: Mauro) Mc Knight who shared fifty seven years of marriage. Services will be Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at 11 AM in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Twp., Ohio with Pastor Jay Roller officiating; interment will follow with full military honors. The Walter A. Frey Funeral Home, 700 W. Erie Ave., Lorain, Ohio 44052 is entrusted with the arrangements.
